We're going to the Zoo Zoo Zoo - Part 1

Tuesday, 30 October 2012

We are all excited when we woke up to our Zoo outing day. It was Little J's first visit to the zoo and ours since many many years ago. We packed our bags, which I think is enough for a 3D2N trip looking at the size of the baggage. Anyway, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially with a toddler.

Took a cab and off to the zoo we went.

We arrived to had our first photo taken with the 'fake' Jia Jia and Kai Kai. We will definitely be back to see them when their 'home' is opened to visitors.

Giraffes greeting us on our way in.

We saw lots of animals.

Cotton Top Tamarin trying to hide itself from the flashy cameras
False Gharial enjoying the super hot sun
Tapir having a dip to cool itself
White Tiger thinking of how to jump over the moat
Little J is amazed with the big fish
A Lizard lazing on the branch
Size of the Kangaroo's shoes compare to Hubby's feet
A shy Kangaroo
Baboons finding shade in the shelter
It's half time. We took a rest and a bite while watching the Rainforest Fights Back Show. It was such a hot day. Little J was tired out from the sun shining on him the whole day.

A tired Jay
Orang Utan Vs Man to see who can open the coconut faster. Verdict: Orang Utan 1, Man 0
After the show, we made our way to the tram station. Along the way we met more animals.

A Manatee, which I think looks rather sad
African Penguins that have gotten used to our hot weather
A rare family photo taken on the tram.
Relaxing and enjoying the wind on the tram
We alighted the tram and proceed to the Rainforest Kidzworld. We had so much fun there, especially for Little J. Stay tune to the blog post on Thursday for Part 2 of Zoo trip.

Fun this Week #3 - Mini Train Fun

Monday, 29 October 2012

We went for a mini train ride at VivoCity.

The ride is $6. But we managed to enjoy the promotional price of $5 which ended on 27 Oct 12. This is located at the Promenade just outside SingKids.

There is a bench with books for your child to entertain himself while waiting for the train ride. Here's Little J flipping through the books while waiting.

He's all excited to get on the train.

Exploring the wagon.

Train is moving off.

View of the harbor.

Back at the station and had a photo taken with the train.

He had fun riding on the train.

Foodie Fridays: Sliced Fish Macaroni

Friday, 26 October 2012

I am always pressed for time. Yet, I want to prepare nutritious meals for my little one. To make things easier, I usually prepare one dish meal for the family. Something that Little Jay can eat.

So this is another simple dish - Sliced Fish Macaroni.

1 Threadfin tail (remove the bone from the flesh, and slice the fish fillet)
Soy sauce
1 Tsp Oil
2 Slices of Ginger
2 Cloves of Garlic (leave skin on)
5 Red dates
Some wolfberries
Any Vegetables (your preference)

1) Marinate the fish slice with cornstarch and soy sauce. I do agaration here. So it is up to your preference.
2) Heat up the Oil in a pot and fry the Ginger, Garlic and Fish Bone until slightly brown.
3) Pour in the Water and boil together with the Red Dates.
4) Lower the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes.
5) Strain the Fish soup.
6) In another pot, cook Macaroni according to packaging instructions.
7) While waiting for the Macaroni to be cooked, bring the fish soup to a boil and add in the Vegetables, Wolfberries and the Fish slice. Season with some salt according to your taste.
8) Drain the Macaroni and serve in serving bowls.
9) Pour the Fish soup over the Macaroni and serve.

Wordless Wed: Silence is...

Wednesday, 24 October 2012

Have you come across this saying: "Silence is golden... Unless you have a toddler. In that case silence is very suspicious."

Jay was playing by himself on a particular afternoon. He was talking to himself as he played. There was also occasional banging of the toys.

I then decided to go for a quick shower.

When I stepped in the shower, I could still hear him playing.

But suddenly, silence. All silence. I couldn't hear him talking. There was also no sound of the toys. I called out to him: "Jayden, what are you doing".

And more silence.

I was worried something might have happened. I quickly finished my bath and rush out.

This is what he was doing. Happily and silently tearing up tissue paper.

Thank You Little Jay

Tuesday, 23 October 2012

It was a normal afternoon nap. You crawled towards me and looked at me in the eyes. I looked back at you, you laid your head on my chest, closed your eyes and fall asleep.

Looking at you, emotions came over me and tears start running down my face. It was tears of gratefulness, of relief and of thankfulness. Thank you for coming into our lives.

How happy we were when the pregnancy test showed positive.

How difficult it was for me to endure the morning sickness. And not forgetting the hunger pangs.

How worried we were when bleeding episodes hit me. How I was so worried when I had to be hospitalized and confined to bed rest.

How I had to endure the labor pain when the nurse say it was too late to take epidural because you were already on your way out. Thankfully you gave me a very fast delivery so that I do not need to endure the pain for too long.

How lost I was being a first time mummy. I had no idea why you kept crying despite you were already fed, changed and carried. I was so desperate that I suspect I was falling into desperation soon.

Gradually, things started to get better. You sleep better, you drink better, you become more predictable. My milk supply also becomes more stable.

You smiled when we smile at you. You started to giggle which eventually turns to laughter.  Did I mention how contagious your laughter was?

You become more mobile. You learnt to turn over, sit, crawl, walk, run and climb. You learnt to babble, sign and talk. You are always bringing laughter and joy to the people around you.

Thank you for all the valuable lessons you have taught us. Thank you for teaching us to be more patient, forgiving and generous. Thank you for teaching us to slow down our pace and enjoy the moment. Thank you for teaching us not to too particular over the smallest things.

Once again, thank you for coming into our lives.

Fun this Week #2 (21 Oct 12)

We did not manage to do a lot of activities this weekend. Hubby was working and it was home alone for Jay and me. Furthermore, Jay was very cranky. He whined over the slightest thing and wanted me to stay by his side all the time.

Nonetheless, we tried to have some fun.

I made play dough and set him up to play.

His first touch on the play dough.

Knife in action.

He did not really enjoy it. Maybe because the dough was too sticky. He does not like the feel of it in his hand. After a while he wants me to remove it.

I will let him try this the next time. It is great sensory fun for him.

Foodie Fridays: Orange Raisin Rice

Friday, 19 October 2012

I have oranges in my fridge which I do not know what to do. So I made orange juice. Some I drank and some my boy drank but there are still leftover. I decided that I could do some cooking with it. I found this recipe for Orange Scented Rice courtesy of Cuisine Paradise.

I made some amendments to the recipe. I omitted the spices, added an egg and cooked everything in my Happy Call Pan (less washing up after the meal..yeah!!).

While the rice is cooking, my kitchen is filled with the refreshing smell of the orange. It also taste great, sweet with a hint of tangy taste. The little boy also loves this dish.

1 Egg, beaten
1/2 Tbsp Olive Oil
3 Cloves Garlic
1 Shallots
1 Tbsp Orange Zest (More if you want a more tangy taste)
1 Cup Uncooked Rice
100ml Orange Juice
1 1/2 Cup Water
A few dashes of Ground Cinnamon (Depends on your taste)
A handful of raisins

1) Fry the egg and break it up into strips. Dish and leave aside.
2) Heat up the oil in the pan.
3) Saute the Garlic and Shallots till fragrant.
4) Add in Orange Zest and stir fry for a while.
5) Add in Rice and Cinnamon and stir fry.
6) Pour in the Orange Juice and Water.
7) When the water comes to a boil, add in Raisins and close the cover. Lower the fire to low and let it simmer for about 15-20 min. You may open up the cover and check if the rice is cooked.
8) Before dishing, add in the fry egg and give a quick stir and serve.
