Baby J's Birth Story

by - Wednesday, July 17, 2013

It was 29 June 2013, the day Baby J finally hits 38 weeks. I knew he was going to be born anytime soon. And true enough, on the very same day at 5:30am, I felt the first contraction. Thinking that it might be a false contraction, I continued to monitor the situation while trying to catch more sleep.

6:30am: Contractions were about 15-20 minutes apart. Ok, this should be the real thing. I woke hubby up and told him I am having contractions and we started to get ready to go to the hospital.

9:00am: Contractions were about 10 minutes apart. Just to be very sure that I am really going into labor, we decided to visit my gynae first. Gynae checked and I was 2cm dilated. She told us to get something to eat and go walk walk before checking in for admission in the afternoon.

12:30pm: Admitted for delivery. Strangely, contractions seem to have slowed down, 30 to 45 minutes apart. Not good.

3:00pm: Gynae came and I was only 3cm dilated. We decided to break the waterbag. Gynae said that baby has pooped in the waterbag. This is a sign of distress and after some discussion we decided to put on a drip to speed things up. Initially I hope that I do not need any drip. But for the sake of baby, I had no choice.

Things started to get moving. Contractions were coming one after another, fast and furious. I was determined not to take epidural and choose laughing gas. As time passed, the pain started to get more unbearable. I started to scream like a mad woman, screaming my lungs out. I could feel that baby can't wait to come out. The nurses keep telling me to stop screaming and to breath in as much as possible. With the effect of the laughing gas, I was not too sure of what's happening. At one point, I heard hubby telling me that baby's heartbeat is dropping. I braced myself and tried to take deep breaths.

5:46pm: Finally I had dilated to 10cm. After a few pushes, Baby J is born!! Seeing him, all the pain seemed to amazingly disappeared for a while. I could feel all the muscles in my body relaxing. Seeing the sight of him makes everything worthwhile.
