Old Orange Octopus

Big J's childcare has a Parental Project every term. The purpose is for the parents to get involve with what the child is learning in school. It is also a great opportunity for bonding and learning together with the child.

This term, the theme is 'Sea Creature' and 'Animals'. Parents and the child are to work together to create an artwork that suits the theme.

We decided to do an Octopus. I also took the opportunity to teach him the letter 'O' and the number '8'.

First I gathered the materials and punched 8 holes into the paper plate.

Before we start on the artwork, we sang this Phonic song for the letter 'O', which is Old Orange Octopus. Then I drew an Octopus on the whiteboard, emphasising that the head of the Octopus looks like 'O'. I then drew in the arms of the Octopus and we counted together.

Going on to the artwork, I first showed him that we are going to paint the paper plate orange, referring back to the Old Orange Octopus. I also showed him that we are going to thread the pipecleaners into the holes so that these will look like the 8 arms of the Octopus. Again, we counted the pipecleaners together. Lastly, we will stick the googly eyes onto the Octopus.

So, let's get started.
