An Alphabet Zoo by Julia Gabriel + Giveaway

Tuesday, 9 December 2014

Do you know what is the first step of learning to read? Yes, Phonics. Phonics is the basic building block for reading. When you know the sounds of the letters, you will be able to blend them together and sound out the words.

We started phonics with Big J when he was about 1.5 years old using LeapFrog Letter Factory. We played the DVD almost every weekend and he would sit there and watch the show. We also sing the song to him. There was one day (I can't remember how old he was then) when he could say the sound of the letter A. We were delighted! When he was about 2 years plus, he already knows the sound of all the letters.

Now that Small J is turning 1.5 years old, it is time for him to start learning some phonics.

Last month, we received this book 'An Alphabet Zoo Phonemic Adventure with Rainbow Bear' by Julia Gabriel. Ms Julia Gabriel is the Founder and Creative Director of Julia Gabriel Education. The book is beautifully illustrated by Kathy Creamer. Together with the zoo animals, Rainbow Bear brings children on a fun journey to learn about the sound of each alphabet.

When we first received the book, Big J was eager to read the book. He can't really read yet, but he can say the sound of each letter on the book cover. We need more practice to let him learn to blend the letters together to form the words.

Each letter of the alphabet is illustrated on a single page, with many other things that begins with the same letter. We play an 'I Spy' game, asking Big J to find the things that begins with the letter A on the page. He is able to identify the Astronaut, Alligator, Ambulance, Ant and Acrobat. I show him the others that he had left out and this helps to build on to his vocabulary. I also ask him to find the Big 'A' and the small 'a', which he did correctly.

The best thing about this book is that it comes with a CD and a song book that children can sing along to. Each letter song starts with a short story of the animal. It asks the children to find the letter, then follow by the song. All the songs follow the same tune, which is very catchy. This consistency means that children can easily follow along. Small J could dance along to the tune.

An Alphabet Zoo retails at $29.95 and is available at Julia Gabriel Centre, Forum the Shopping Mall, major bookstores and educational stores.
