My Cooking Journey #3: ABC Soup, Mayo Crispy Prawns, Steam Fish

by - Friday, January 02, 2015

Hello! A Happy New Year to everyone. Were you feasting out over the holidays?

I'm a bit lagging on updating my cooking journey. These are what we had in the last weekend of 2014.

ABC Soup

Chicken bones

1. Blanch the chicken. Wash, remove skin and fats and set aside.
2. Put all ingredients in pot and boil for 15 minutes. Lower fire and simmer for about 2-3 hours.

ABC soup is a very easy soup to cook. I believe most mommies would have prepared this before. You can add in any ingredients, but these are the basic ones. You can also use pork rib instead of chicken bones.

As usual, I didn't add any salt. You may of course add some salt and pepper to taste before serving.

Mayo Crispy Prawns

1. Remove shell from the prawns leaving the tail on. Devine and clean the prawns.
2. Coat prawns with mayonnaise.
3. Coat with breadcrumbs.
4. Put on a baking tray and bake at 160 degrees for about 15-20 mins till cooked and crispy.

This is very nice and is a hit with Big J. You should try this recipe out. Be sure to use fresh prawns.

Steam Fish

Fish (I use threadfin here)
Salt & Pepper
1 Tsp Sesame oil

Mixed the following in a bowl.
1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
1/2 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
1/4 Tsp Sugar
2 Tbsp Hot Water

1. Marinate the fish with a bit of salt and pepper. This helps to remove the fishy smell.
2. Put fish on steaming plate. Add sesame oil.
3. Put in steamer and steam till cooked.
4. In a wok, heat up some oil and fry garlic till fragrant.
5. Pour in the sauce. Once it bubbles, turn to small fire and let it simmer a while.
6. Pour away the gravy from the steamed fish, leaving a little bit behind.
7. Pour the cooked sauce over the fish. Serve.

If you want it to have taste of spiciness, you can add in minced ginger together with the garlic.

  1. Hi

Will like know the meals you cook also include for your youngest toddler? As your recipes included Soy Sauce
Oyster sauce, sugar in your cooking. I am trying to get some ideas to cook for my 22mth old son. Thanks :)

    1. Hi, Yes, my youngest toddler is included. Usually I will lower the amount of seasoning. Some seasoning like soy sauce or oyster sauce, I will buy those without MSG. For salt, I will try not to add. The level of seasoning depends on individual preference. Some parents insist no seasoning at all while some are aright with a little amount. In the above meal, the soup does not have any seasonings, the prawns I will remove the crispy part and give him the prawn itself and the fish I will give him the flake of interior of the fish / or 'wash' in the soup before giving him.
