[Review & Giveaway] Learning with Animal 4D+ Flashcards

Tuesday, 1 September 2015

I received a pack of animals flashcards from DIY Flashcard & Edutoys.

Looks very normal ya? Just like any ordinary flashcards. But wait....

The animals come alive when you view them through your smart devices' screen!! Isn't it amazing?

Learning nowadays is no longer only confined to books. With technological advances, there are many learning apps in the market which help to make learning more interactive and interesting.

Animal 4D+ Flashcards is a pack of cards with 26 illustrations of animals from A to Z. Using augmented reality technology, these animals can come to life with the use of a smart phone or tablet. Users will be able to interact with the animals and bring learning to a whole new level!

Here are what we have done with the cards.

1. Recognising the Animals

The alphabets from A to Z are printed on the back of the cards. We laid down the cards with the letters facing up and guessed what could be the animal that starts with that letter. Then, we will turn over the cards to see the animals. Some of the letters are easy while some are more challenging. We looked at the pictures of the animals and talked about their physical appearances, their habitats, the food they eat, etc.

2. Observing and Interacting with the 4D Animals

When the boys got bored of looking at the 2D animals, I took out my smartphone and asked Big J to hold the phone over the cards. The animals come alive instantly! The boys were super excited to see this. They were vying whose turn it is to hold the phone. When they saw the animals moving, they got more elated! We can also hear the sound that the animals make. We observed and discussed how the animals move and the sounds they make.

We can finger pinch on the screen to make the animals bigger or smaller or turn the cards around to observe the animals in 360° view. They tried to touch the animals but broke out laughing when the animals disappeared off the screen because they blocked the image on the cards.

3) Encyclopaedic Knowledge

The app has a function that shows the encyclopaedic information of each of the animals. In this view, we can choose to look at the animals on 2D or 3D mode. For the 3D mode, we can also enlarge or reduce the size of the animals. However, I feel that the words here are too small and wordy for my boys. This would be great for parents to read up first and discuss these facts with the kids while observing the animals.

4) Feeding the Animals

Not only can you look at the animals, you can feed them too. Download the food cards from here, print them out and use these food to feed the animals. Place the animals and the food on the table and watch the animals walk towards their food. When you remove the food card, the animals will walk back to the flashcards. How fascinating!

I placed a monkey, a whale and a banana on the table and asked Big J which of these two animals eats banana. 'Monkey!' he said. We then held the phone over the cards and watched the monkey walked over to eat the bananas. 'Yeah! You're right! Monkey eats banana.' Currently there are three food cards - grass, flowers and banana. I wish they could come up with more options of food for the other animals.

4) Themed Learning

We used the cards to do some themed learning. I asked Big J to pick out the cards of the animals that live on a farm or in the sea. We also made a zoo scene and used minions as visitors.

There is an option where you can capture a screenshot and save it to your phone or share it on other social media. However, it requires you to make a choice, each time you press on the screen capture button. This means the kids will have to wait a while for you to save the picture before they can continue exploring. I would prefer if it could automatically save the photos instead of having the pop-up every time.

The only regret I have? That we do not have an iPad or a tablet to give us a bigger view of the animals.

Nothing speaks louder than a video. I will leave you to watch the following video of the Animal 4D+ Flashcards from DIY Flashcard & Edutoys.
